Voting in the elections - The Padròn - The Civil Registry. The Censo - The Electoral Registry.
Spanish national authorities are announcing plans to stop registration of voters at the end of October, that’s some 7 months before the elections themselves in May. It really doesn’t matter how legal or not that process is, that’s for others to sort out, but the message is clear. Check you’re on the Censo (Electoral Roll) as soon as possible. You have to be on the Padron, the civil registry, to enter the voting lists. Don’t assume you’re on the Censo, you must ask to register.

Driving Licence Renewals -As of now it is no longer necessary to go to the Tráfico offices in Alicante to renew your driving licence. A law change means that you will now be able to pay for the new licence at the centre where your reflexes are tested.  In Jávea this is the Medical Centre CUME. The testing centre will give drivers a provisional document with which you will be covered to drive for 90 days, until your new licence arrives. TAX

IBI (General Rates) TAX The period for Voluntary Payment of taxes is :- August 13th to November 5th. Non receipt of these bills does NOT exempt tax payers from payment. Duplicate copies may be obtained from the Town Hall “Area Económica” building in the Calle Mayor in the old town of Jávea, open 9.00 - 2.00pm.

Health Cards (EHIC) - There is a change in the law as regards EU health cards for pensioners and those registered as resident for healthcare through the E121 or E109.  Up to now you would have got your card here in Spain valid for one year. As from May 1st 2010, that will change and you will have to get your EHIC cover from the country where your pension comes from, eg. UK, Holland, Germany. The card will be valid for five years.  Your health cover, with the SIP card, while resident in Spain will remain as it is now. If you are working here and paying into the social security system you will still need to get your EHIC cards in Denia.
