Jávea

Welcome to Jávea or Xàbia as it is known in Valenciano, the local language.

Jávea is the most beautiful residential seaside town and resort on the Costa Blanca coastline.

Jávea is divided into five basic areas. The town (Pueblo), the Port (Aduanas), Arenal (the beach and principal tourist area), outlying rural urban areas or suburbs (Costa Nova, Montgo, Cansalades and many others) and the rural (agricltural) areas located mainly in the centre and to the west of the parish. The area is 65 square kilometres and sits in an eastward facing valley with the highest of the local mountains, Montgo, to the north.

Development of this seaside valley as a resort began in the mid sixties when it was discovered by the international ex-pat community. It has the most equable of climates on the Iberian peninsula. This quality provided the main incentive to the increasing number of people who bought property and chose to holiday, live or work here.

Historically and traditionally the livelihood of the town and port came from agriculture and fishing. These two industries are now declining rapidly and have been replaced by service industries and property development. At the time of writing the foreign resident population has exceeded the number of Spanish living here and if one includes the non Javea born residents, those from other parts of Spain, the indigenous Javienses now represent approximately twenty percent of the total population (five years ago this figure was just slightly more than than twenty-five percent).
