Comments on the urban devlopment of Javea

The Genesis of Javea City? Extracts from 'Outand About' with Ian Phillips.

In the beginning was a remote and small seaside village. Then came the word, and the word was great.

The people came to witness the word and stayed and the village grew to be a town and more people came. The first peoples left the land, they left the seas and they sold their birthright.

And the rich became richer and desired to control all men and business. And the rich called out to the politicians and the judges came therein; and they also went forth together against the people. They began with the law and brought forth the LRAU to control all manner of land. Amidst a great clamour the people knew not wherein to turn and great was their grief

and anguish. So great was the word.

I poorly plagiarise the style of the Bible but the message is sent.

2004 Bulletins - If you live here you can't fail to have noticed the amount of work being started on the roads and roundabouts. We are entering what may turn out to be the most profound urban development phase of this community.

I list below some of the projects scheduled for development. Many are imminent, several are in the pipeline, several are some way off and one is awaiting the 'Final decision'.

Municipal Swimming Pool.

Museum of the Sea.

Municipal Auditorium.

Port Social Centre.

Municipal Bus Station.

Music University.

New school at Arenal.

Subject to decision. The new Hospital.

A direct connection to the motorway.

A link to the railway system.

The Amplification of the Port.

The roundabout on the Benitatxell road.

The development of the peripheral road system (Via Benitatxell and Camino de los Cabanes)

Almost ready to open the new offices for the Gestion Tributaria ( tax collection offices).

About to open. The Municipal library.

Change of site. Town tourism office into the present tax collection offices.

The new road from the Port to the Denia road and new Ronda Norte.

Building of a one way coast road, Avda del Mediterráneo, return route along Via Genovese.

New bridge for the above road.

Renovations to the Hermita church on the Denia road.

Renovation work on the church in the town.

Port roundabout.

A use and project for the Cine Central.

Completion of Artists workshops in Farmacia  Tena.

Car and large vehicle parking throughout the community.

The construction of two blocks of government subsidised apartments.

(Current status see next page)

These projects will not begin at the same time but there will most definitely be extensive overlapping. Combine that lot with the current massive rate of private and commercial developments and you'll see where I'm going, the concern that I'm expressing. I sincerely hope that there is someone or a committee somewhere local and 'on hand' coordinating all this.

Great interest has been expressed by the town to support the America's Cup. The enormous overall development programme mentioned above will hardly be conducive to sophisticated tourism and could well have a most detrimental effect on residential tourism, the largest of the local industries.
